Alternative Valentine’s Day

February 14, 2011

My feelings towards Valentine’s Day has always been mixed. Most times it was an annoying reminder of not being in a relationship. Other years it was an excuse to buy candy. And yet other times it was a time to celebrate love. Lately I’ve been thinking Valentine’s Day shouldn’t be a time just to celebrate the love shared between two people, but to show your love for yourself. This year why not celebrate yourself for Valentines?

Indulge your sweet tooth. Yes, you may have done this throughout the Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, but for today just break your diet and indulge in your favorite treat. Buy yourself a giant box of delicious chocolate or maybe stop off at your favorite candy shop. Covet some chocolate covered strawberries all to yourself.

Spread the love. Remember the days in school when you would decorate boxes to collect your Valentine’s cards in than and wait impatiently until your teacher would allow you to open them? It was exciting, thrilling almost. Why not bring back those days? Send Valentine’s to your friends and co-workers. It might not be the same as when you were in school, but who wouldn’t smile at a Scooby Do proclaiming how much he “luvs you”?

Celebrate. We have Christmas parties Halloween parties so why not Valentine’s parties? Pull out some Champaign and chocolate covered strawberries and some simple decorations of pink and gold. Or go all out with chocolates, cakes, pink balloons, hot chocolate, and hearts everywhere. Throw out some love movies or play Stupid Cupid by Connie Francis. Invite your friends over and celebrate.

Or do a girls night out. Make reservations at your favorite restaurant, dress up, and share stories about you first love, your first kiss, the worst date ever… Make it a bonding moment.

Treat yourself. Instead of going out and getting lingerie  why not get something for yourself? Treat yourself to something that you have had your eye on. Something that will make you feel good. While you are at it why not get your hair styled and get a manicure or pedicure or both. Better yet why not splurge a bit and buy yourself a piece of jewelry.  Just because you aren’t dressing up for someone else doesn’t mean that you should go all out and dress up for yourself. Pamper yourself today just as a reminder as how much you love yourself.

What are you doing this Valentine’s Day? How do you usually celebrate?
