What Would Make You Happy?

October 5, 2010

Pop quiz! (In honor of back to school season) Grab a pen and paper and write down what would make you happy. If you were living in the perfect life what would that look like? Be realistic. Although I would be very happy if I could ride a giraffe everywhere I would be insanely happy, but that is a bit unrealistic and a story for another day.

So what did you come up with? Would you have better relationships? Be more financially stable? Travel more? Be healthier? These are things on my list. Multiple studies done show that the happiest people among us are successful in the following areas:

  • They enjoy their work
  • Have strong relationships with family and friends
  • Are married
  • Practice a faith
  • Are optimistic
  • They are healthy
  • Don’t compare themselves to those who have more money
  • Don’t focus on money

Do you see areas here that you would like to work on? I sure do. So how do we find this happiness? Time to pick up that pen and paper again. Make a category for each area that you would like to work on to achieve happiness. Under each write down what you could do to achieve it. Don’t forget to write down things that you are already doing so you can see what areas you are succeeding at and what areas need more work. Here is some ideas to get you started.

Relationships:

Join a club to meet new people
Volunteer
Reconnect with your old friends and siblings.
Tell your parents thank you.
Tell your partner why you love them.
Find a way to respark the romance in your marriage/partnership
Try telling your friends what makes them so special.
Start a conversation with someone you never met before.

Health:

Get a physical
Walk more
Change the channel to FitTV and work out.
Try yoga
Join a dance class
Challenge your friends see who can get healthier.
Create a support group.
Throw out all the bad food in your kitchen.
Eat more fish.
Trade the lattes for water.

Mental:

Meditate
Take a walk in a park
Turn off all the noise around you and sit in the quiet
Read
Talk to someone

Work:

Find a new job you love
Ask for a promotion
Find a mentor
Take a class to update or learn new skills.

Faith:

Find what you believe in.
Define what you believe in.
Practice your beliefs
Accept others regardless of their beliefs.

What would make you happy? How are you working to achieve it?

Great list-of-lists! I think in this case after making the list, it’s important to pick a few (maybe one) per category that you really know you have time to do… Not to go too easy on oneself, but not to overextend and then fall short… xo bb
